Harz – Forest in transition

Harz Mountains near Bad Harzburg

A day trip from Bad Harzburg takes us to the Rabenklippen with the best view of the Brocken.

At first glance, I’m startled by the countless shiny, syrupy-brown deadwood trunks. This initially bleak, distopic sight dominates the landscape. Drought, storms and monocultures of spruce trees, which are not native to lower altitudes, have created easy prey for the bark beetle.

But the picture is deceptive! The forest is in upheaval. Young spruce and beech trees have long since returned to the shelter of the dead tree trunks. A new, varied forest wilderness is developing here, providing a valuable habitat for plants and animals and thus making an important contribution to biodiversity.

Beech trees will prevail in the lower areas of the Harz Mountains, and spruce trees in the higher areas. Birch, aspen and rowan trees can also be found in the open spaces.

Lynx enclosure

The lynx show enclosure is part of the reintroduction project for lynxes in the Harz Mountains and is definitely worth a visit. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Rabenklippen. The ascent can be shortened with the cable car and the walk can even be reached by bus. Of course, it is especially nice to see the lynx on foot.

Lynx “Pamina” in her spacious outdoor enclosure

I am particularly pleased about this photo of the lynx Pamina. At a suitable distance, she allowed me to take a portrait for a moment after all. – So it was worth carrying the heavy equipment.

Unfortunately, the lynx enclosurein Bad Harzburghad to be put to sleepat the end ofSeptember.
